History

When the government did the initial planning of the Woodlands extension MRT line, Sembawang MRT station was only intended as a provisional station to be build at a later date due to the underdevelopment of the Sembawang New Town. But on the second round of planning, the government decided to build this station and omit Sungei Kadut sation from the plan. This station was opened on 10 February 1996.[1]

Bus services

The following bus services pass by the bus stops along Sembawang Way:

Incidents

2010 accident

Train services were disrupted at stations between Woodlands and Yishun in the southbound direction for about an hour on the Vesak Day afternoon of 28 May 2010. This was due to a track incident at Sembawang Station.

About 7,300 commuters were affected when a man was hit by a train. He was pronounced dead at the scene around 11.30am.

To maintain service on the unaffected stretches of the North-South line during the incident, all southbound trains were turned around at Woodlands MRT Station.

Some northbound trains were also turned around at Yishun MRT Station.

To ease traffic, SMRT deployed bus bridging services to ferry passengers between Woodlands and Yishun MRT stations during the disruption.[2]

2011 accident

On Apr 15 2011, a man in his mid-30s, had fallen onto the train tracks at Sembawang MRT station. The Singapore Civil Defence Force and Singapore Police Force said they received a call at about 11.35pm.

Citizen journalism website STOMP said the man, who had been hit by the train, was transported to Khoo Teck Puat Hospital and later arrested for attempted suicide.

He complained of back pain.

An online news portal reported a SMRT spokesperson as saying that about 1,500 passengers were affected by the incident. Buses were deployed to ferry passengers from Woodlands to Yishun MRT Stations.[3]

Platform Screen Doors

As with most of the above-ground stations built in the past along the North South Line, it was initially built without Platform Screen Doors that prevent commuters from falling onto the train tracks. On 29 October 2011, the installation of the half height platform screen doors started. As of 31 December 2011, all the doors have been installed. But one of TO door on the north bound shattered, thus waiting for replacement. Nevertheless, the top covers for north bound are installed. The LTA said that the doors will be in operation by the end of February.
